A.J.'s HANGING SNOWMAN

Size:, Hook: G/4.5mm, Yarn: Caron Simply Soft Party: A: White=1.0oz, OR  Worsted Weight: A: White= 1.3oz, B: Brown. 9 small amt  Additional Supplies: 3 Stitch marker, black foam sheet, orange for nose,  black pipe cleaners, buttons or pom poms.

HEAD (Back)    W/white

Rnd 1: Ch4, work 11dc in 4th ch from hook, join.  (12dc)

Rnd 2: Ch3, dc in same st, 2dc in each st around, join & fasten off.  (24dc)  

FRONT: Repeat Rnds 1&2 of back, DO NOT fasten off at end of rnd 2, continue to rnd 3

Rnd 3: Place both circles w/wrong sides together, w/front facing you, work through both pieces.  Ch1, sc in same st as joining, sc in 12sts, mark this st, Sc in last 11sts,  join & fasten off, leaving a long tail at least 18” long.   (24sc) This is right/front side.
MIDDLE: (Back) W/white

Rnds 1-2: Repeat same for head, but do not fasten off at end of rnd 2.
Rnd 3: Ch3, dc in same st, [Dc in next st, 2dc in next st] Repeat around ending w/dc in last st, join & fasten off. (36dc) This is right/front side.

FRONT: Repeat rnds 1-3 of back, DO NOT fasten off and of rnd 3, continue to rnd 4.

Rnd 4: Place both circles w/wrong sides together, w/front facing you, work through both pieces. Ch1, sc in same st as joining, sc in 18sts, mark this st, sc in last 17sts, join & fasten off leaving a long tail same as head.  (36sc)

BOTTOM: (Back) W/white

Rnds 1-2: Repeat same for head, but do not fasten off at end of rnd 2.

Rnd 3: Ch3, dc in same st, 2dc in each st around, join & fasten off.  (48dc)

FRONT: Repeat rnds 1-3 of back, DO NOT fasten off and of rnd 3, continue to rnd 4.

Rnd 4:  Place both circles w/wrong sides together, w/front facing you, work through both pieces. Ch1, sc in same st as joining, sc in 24sts, mark this st, sc in last 23sts, join & fasten off.   (48sc) This is right/front side.

ASSEMBLY: W/Head, right/front side facing you, *insert hook in joining st, grab long tail and pull through w/a slst.  Ch7*,  take your middle circle and with the wrong/back side facing you, join w/a slst in marked st, fasten off.  

W/middle circle, right/front side facing you, repeat *to* once, take your bottom circle and w/wrong/back side facing you, join w/a slst in marked st. Fasten off and weave in all ends.  

HANGER: W/white yarn, join w/slst in marked st of head, ch10, join in same st, fasten off, weave in ends.  

BROOM: W/B, (Bigger broom instructions are listed with smaller broom but in bold. I used both WW yarn for broom regardless of what I used for the snowman.

Smaller Broom (Worsted Weight)
Row 1:  Ch11/Ch21 Sc in 2nd ch from hook, and each ch across.  (10sc)/(20sc)

Rows 2-3/2-4: Ch1, turn, sc in each st across. (10sc)/(20sc)  Fasten off after row 3/4, leaving a very long tail to sew closed & use for bristles.  

BRISTLES: W/tail, fold lengthwise and sew closed.  For bristles, (still using tail),  Insert needle in edge thru both layers, keep a loop on finger, insert needle again, but pull through to ‘close” the loop, so it doesn’t pull through, repeat as many times as you want.  Afterwards, wrap the yarn around the base of the bristles and broom, then weave in ends.

ARMS: Use pipe cleaners, and cut to your desired length, use smaller piece to wrap for fingers.

HAT: I used a foam sheet for my hat, it’s more stable than felt

EYES/NOSE/BUTTONS: Use buttons, felt, foam, or pom poms for eyes/buttons. Use a small piece of orange felt, or pom pom for nose.

My son, AJ,  made this snowman in kindergarten, (he’s 18 now) I have displayed it every winter, and decided to make a crocheted version of it.

SCARE-LESS CROW WALL HANGING

Take one of your back pieces and place wrong sides of both pieces together, with right side of front circle facing you, work through both pieces.  This is now the Rs, and the back piece is the Ws

Rnd 4: (Rs), Slst in joining st on both circles,  Ch1, sc in same st and each st around, join. (48sc) Fasten off, weave in ends.

HAT: W/B
Row 1: (Brim), With back side (ws) facing you, join B in any back lp, (this is the lp away from you).  Ch3, dc in same st, 2dc in next 9lps, turn work around so front (rs) is now facing you.  (20dc)

We are now working the hat, which is worked behind the brim.
Row 2: Sc in the unused lp behind brim, sc in next 9lps, ch1, turn.  (10sc)
Row 3: Ch1, sc in first st, and next 9sts, ch1, turn.  (10sc)
Row 4: Scdec twice, sc in next 2sts, scdec twice, ch1, turn. (6sc)
Row 5: Scdec in first 2sts, sc in 2sts, scdec over last 2sts, ch1, turn.  (4sc)
Row 6: Scdec twice, ch1, turn.  (2sc)
Row 7: Scdec, slst in same st.  Fasten off, weave in ends.
Hair:  (Rs)
With rs facing you,  join C w/sc around post of first sc under brim.  [Ch4, fpsc in next st]9x. Slst around next st,  fasten off, weave in ends.  (9lps)

Neck Straw: (Rs)
With front facing you and scarecrow upside down, join B w/sc in 15th st.  [Ch6, sc in next st]8x, slst in next st, fasten off, weave in ends.  (8lps)

Top Scarecrow: (Hat Border)
(RS) W/B, join on right side of hat at row 2.  Ch1, sc evenly up side of hat, 3sc in top of hat, sc evenly down left side of hat.  Ch1, turn, slst up the left side until you are in the 2nd sc of top.  Ch12, slst in tip of hat, fasten off, weave in ends.  
Hat Border: (Middle and last scarecrow)
Repeat the “bold” instructions above,  Ch8, sc in 2nd ch from hook and next 6chs, slst in same sc of hat, ch1, turn, slst up the ch, fasten off, leaving enough tail for sewing.

Assembly:
The ch8 you worked at the top of 2 of the hats will be what you sew to the back of the scarecrows. Turn your scarecrows so the ws is facing you, take your “tail” and place it on the back of a scarecrow, make sure it’s between the 4th and 5th loops of the neck straw, sew “tail” onto back of scarecrow

W/B, join in right side of hat, (row2) with a sc, sc evenly up right side of hat, 3sc in top of hat, sc evenly down left side of hat.  Ch1, turn, slst up left side of hat, in 2nd sc of the tip (top) of hat, work your choice of hanging options below.  If using button closure, see,  “Hanger w/button” below.


Tie Option: (As shown in 1st scarecrow of picture above)
[Ch40, slst in 2nd ch from hook, and next 38chs, slst in same st of hat]2x, fasten off, weave in ends.  

Hanging Loop:  (As shown in 3rd scarecrow of picture above)
Ch20, join in same st of hat.  If you want to reinforce your loop, slst around the lp, fasten off, weave in your ends.

Hanger W/button:  (As shown in 2nd scarecrow of picture above)
Start row 1 w/long tail to sew onto scarecrow.
Row 1: W/Green, Ch10, sc in 2nd ch from hook and each ch across,  ch1, turn.  (9sc)
Rows 2-26: Sc in each st across, ch1, turn. (9sc)
Row 27: Scdec, sc in next 5sts, scdec in last 2sts, ch1, turn.  (7sc)
Row 28: Scdec, sc in next st, ch2, sk-1, sc in next st, scdec in last 2sts, ch1, turn (4sc)
Row 29: Sc in all sts, including chsp.  (5sc) Fasten off, weave in ends

Attachment: Sew your button where you want it, I placed mine over rows 4-6, then decide on your placement, I sewed rows 1-7,  with row 1 at the top of rnd 2 on back of Scarecrow, I also sew part of the hanger onto the hat to give more stability.
